Core Responsibilities and Duties
As a Consultant in Acute Medicine, your primary responsibility will be to lead and manage the care of patients admitted to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), working in tandem with other consultants, junior doctors, specialist nurses and allied health professionals.
You will also be expected to participate in shaping new models of care and refining existing clinical pathways to ensure they align with best practices and national guidelines.
Key responsibilities include:

Taking clinical responsibility for the diagnosis and treatment of patients within the AMU.

Contributing to and leading ward rounds, particularly focusing on early assessment and treatment of medical admissions.

Collaborating closely with Emergency Department clinicians, inpatient ward teams and specialty consultants to ensure a smooth and efficient patient journey.

Involvement in rota development, workforce planning and rota participation (with appropriate work-life balance safeguards).

Ensuring safe discharge planning and contributing to readmission reduction strategies.

Supervising and teaching junior doctors and other staff.

Participating in and potentially leading quality improvement initiatives and audits.

Working to further develop integrated models of urgent and emergency care delivery, including ambulatory and virtual ward solutions.

Ensuring adherence to NHS safety and quality standards while promoting a patient-first approach.

Qualifications and Eligibility Criteria

Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), with a license to practice.

Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine (or within six months of obtaining CCT or EU equivalent certification at the time of interview).

Demonstrable experience in Acute Medicine, with a strong understanding of managing a wide range of acute medical conditions.

Evidence of continued professional development (CPD) and clinical governance participation.

Excellent communication and leadership skills.
